Why Compost?

Composting is an excellent way to recycle kitchen and garden waste. It is very easy to build your own compost bin and use the compost to help your garden grow, without resorting to the use of additional fertilizers which can have a detrimental effect on the environment.

Choosing to compost instead of throwing out organic matter from your home reduces greenhouse gas emissions from the landfill and supports our local economy and lands. The resulting compost product is used by farms and landscape companies locally to add nutrients and improve the quality of soil. Soil with compost mixed in retains water better - meaning plants do better during draughts and less water is needed for irrigation at any time of the year. Research studies at the University of California Davis have shown that compost also sequesters a greater amount of carbon in the soil from the air, increasing its greenhouse gas reduction benefits.
