CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Charlottesville Fire Department adds Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to Response Readiness
The Charlottesville Fire Department added Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to the department’s response capability. CFD members, including fire marshals, hazardous materials team members, and the training staff, recently completed a three-day drone pilot certification course at Piedmont Virginia Community College. As a 21st-century all-hazards department, CFD is now prepared to implement UAVs to support building inspections, firefighting operations, swift-water rescue, response to trails, and other emergencies. The next phase will involve incorporating drones into the operational policies and framework within the department. The DJI Mavic 2 drones also include thermal imaging cameras that assist in detecting heat and fire in hidden spaces inaccessible by firefighters.
