The Comprehensive Plan project timeline updated; Public hearings scheduled for October and November 2021 before the Planning Commission and City Council. 


CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Cville Plans Together announces updates and upcoming meetings related to the Comprehensive Plan update process.

Project Overview

  • The City has been working in partnership with a consultant team on an effort to update Charlottesville’s Comprehensive Plan (including an Affordable Housing Plan, which was completed and endorsed by the Council in March 2021).
  • Following the Comprehensive Plan update, the next step will be to complete a zoning ordinance rewrite.
  • This project, called Cville Plans Together, is an opportunity for the community to actively participate in updating the future vision for the city, with a focus on equity and affordability.

Project Updates

  • From May 3 to June 13, 2021, the community was invited to participate in the third community review period for Cville Plans Together, to provide input on materials including draft updates to Comprehensive Plan chapters and the draft Future Land Use Map. 
  • In response, community members submitted over 2,300 comments and questions via email, phone, interactive map, online and paper surveys, pop-up events, and webinars. 
  • A summary of all engagement activities and community input is available here. The Cville Plans Together team is refining, and will share responses to, common questions.

Upcoming Meetings and Next Steps

The project timeline has been updated and now reflects that the Planning Commission and City Council public hearings for the Comprehensive Plan are currently planned for October and November. Prior to October, there will be several opportunities to participate in virtual meetings related to the Comprehensive Plan update process, including:

  1. Planning Commission Work Session - August 31, 5:30pm (Register here)
    • The main topic at this meeting will be the draft Future Land Use Map.
  2. Steering Committee - September 1, 4:30pm (Register here
    • The main topic at this meeting will be the draft Future Land Use Map.
  3. Planning Commission Meeting - September 14, 5:30pm (Registration not yet available, but will be posted here)       
    • The main topic at this meeting will be the draft Implementation Chapter and other chapter updates.
