[ARCHIVED] City To Open New Trails Along Moores Creek With Help From Nonprofit Partners

Trail along Moores Creek - Hancock Section, March 2021

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 6, 2021

The trail will be opened for use in the near future and improved with help from UVA volunteers and City staff

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The City of Charlottesville is pleased to announce the opening of new trails along Moores Creek in partnership with the Rivanna Trails Foundation (RTF) and local landowners. These efforts demonstrate how multiple entities are all actively working together to expand public access to outdoor spaces for recreation and enjoyment.

In the Fry’s Spring neighborhood, the City completed two transactions to acquire the property and easement needed to complete a trail connection between Sunset Avenue and McElroy Drive along Moores Creek. The City purchased a half acre of land from Marta Domanska, and received a donation of a trail easement from Eric and Joyce Geilker, who are also lifetime members of the Rivanna Trails Foundation and work on PATC trails in Shenandoah Park. The trail will be opened for use in the near future and improved with help from UVA volunteers and City staff.

The Rivanna Trails Foundation was successful in acquiring a trail lease along Moores Creek in the Belmont/Avon Street area to restore a section of trail. This section of trail had been routed around that Self Storage property for some years while negotiations were underway to provide some legal arrangement for the trail. The current agreement is for an annually renewable lease with hopes that a permanent easement or land acquisition might occur in the future.
