FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 30, 2020
The Charlottesville Police Department is once again launching its annual Winter Wool Campaign, with the hope of assisting families directly impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
From November 1, 2020, to March 1, 2021, officers will be growing beards and donating the proceeds to Toy Lift Charities. Personnel who want to support those efforts can also opt to paint their fingernails or wear non-traditional socks. 2020 has been an extremely difficult year for children, who have been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic due to the drastic changes to their daily lives and routines.
In years past, the officers have been the primary donors to the Winter Wool Campaign. Each officer donates at least $100 to participate in the campaign. This year, in an effort to increase fundraising capacity, we are asking for the community’s assistance. CPD’s goal is to raise $10,000 by December 15, 2020, and we need your help.
As an additional incentive, CPD is providing our officers an extra month of “beard time,” if they are able to find a community member or business to match their fund-raising efforts. For example, if you make a donation and indicate, “I support Officer J. Smith,” Officer Smith will be awarded an extra month of “Winter Wool,” and the children of our community will be rewarded through your contributions.
“CPD is excited to partner with Toy Lift Charities and raise money for an organization whose mission focuses on the enrichment of every child in the Charlottesville community,” said Police Chief Dr. RaShall Brackney. “I am pleased to see our officers continuing to engage with the community, while embracing and modeling ‘Service Beyond the Call’.”
