There will be a dual primary election in Charlottesville on Tuesday, June 23, 2020
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - There will be a dual primary election in Charlottesville on Tuesday June 23, 2020. Polling place hours will be from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Republican voters will choose a candidate for the United States Senate and Democratic voters will choose a candidate for United States House of Representatives in the 5th District. Absentee voting, both in-person and by mail, is currently available. Voters are encouraged to take advantage of voting by mail to minimize the risk of infection during the COVID pandemic.
For those choosing to vote in-person on June 23 the following guidelines and recommendations are offered to ensure a safe and secure election for voters as well as election officials:
Voters:
- Are strongly encouraged to wear a face covering inside the polling place and while waiting to enter. A limited supply of masks will be available at each polling place for voters who need one.
- May take advantage of curb-side voting to avoid entering a polling place. An A-frame sign with the precinct contact phone will be displayed outside of each polling place.
- Will be expected to respect social distancing waiting at six-foot intervals indicated by marks on the floor.
- Must provide a valid photo ID but, in lieu of handing it to the officer of election, will place it in a tray so it can be read.
- Will be offered single-use pens for ballot marking and asked to place them in a designated collection box after use.
- Will have to state which political party for which they wish to receive a ballot.
- Will be asked to enter and exit through the labeled doors to maintain one-way traffic
- Disabled voters can bring an assistant or ask an election officer for assistance. In either case, a Request for Assistance form must be completed.
To ensure a safe election all officials will be screened for symptoms before serving, will wear masks and other protective equipment, and adhere to safe distancing requirements and hand washing recommendations. Plastic guards will be placed between voters and officials at check-in stations and ballot tables and all surfaces will frequently be sanitized.
