CPD Responds to Shooting at Sunshine Supermarket

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – On March 4, 2023, at 2:05 p.m., CPD officers responded to a shooting at Sunshine Supermarket, located on 827 Cherry Ave.

Upon arrival, officers located 20-year-old Justice Kilel, a Gordonsville resident, inside of the business. Mr. Kilel was pronounced deceased at the scene. Shortly after arriving, CPD was notified that UVA Medical Center had received a patient who suffered a gunshot wound.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Mr. Kilel was inside the store purchasing an item when two individuals walked in and assaulted him. During the altercation, two of the individuals involved fired shots. The suspect, 17, who was admitted to UVA Medical Center, has been charged with second degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. Since the suspect is a juvenile, CPD will not be releasing their name.

The second suspect was located at an apartment complex in Albemarle County. He has been identified as 19-year-old Nasier McGhee. He has been charged with one count of malicious wounding. Investigators believe that this incident is part of an ongoing dispute between the suspects and victim.

We want to thank our law enforcement partners, Albemarle County Police, UVA Police, Virginia State Police, and the Charlottesville Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for bringing a quick resolution to this incident.
