The Charlottesville Police Department has announced that certain calls for service will be referred to online reporting
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Due to the current staffing shortages within the Charlottesville Police Department, we have adjusted our response to certain non-emergency calls for service. Certain calls for service will be referred to online reporting here.
Many of these calls are reports of past incidents or crimes not in progress. Officers will continue to respond to emergency calls and crimes in progress. As it relates specifically to past larcenies, officers will still respond in person to larcenies of firearms and vehicles.
Online reports will be reviewed for assignment. Based on the information provided, some online reports may be cleared out upon review without a call back to the reporting party. We are working to add categories to the current list of incidents.
In addition to these adjustments, police officers will not respond to civil matters not identified as exceptions under Code of Virginia: 15.2-1704.
We understand the frustrations of citizens wishing to speak with an officer in person about the incidents they are reporting. Unfortunately, our department is currently experiencing a shortage of 24% of its sworn positions. Shift supervisors are making every effort to manage the resources available and prioritize calls for service based on the severity of the incident and impact on the community.
