Rivanna Pump Station Bypass Pumping System Update
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA –The Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority (RWSA) is reporting progress has been made to install a temporary wastewater pumping bypass system at the Moores Creek Advanced Water Resource Recovery Facility (MCAWRRF). During this process, no overflows have been reported in Riverview or Darden Towe Parks since January 18, 2024. The areas around the manholes that overflowed in the parks have been raked, cleaned, and sanitized.
A pump station was damaged during a storm on January 9, 2024. The initial temporary pumping system has been conveying wastewater flows around the damaged pumping station to complete the normal treatment process. Work is continuing on a second larger temporary system with a pumping capacity of up to 50 million gallons of wastewater a day and is expected to be completed in the next several weeks.
After a significant amount of work by RWSA staff and our contractors, the water that was in the pump station has been pumped out and we are preparing to clean the space. Our investigation will review the events that led to the failure of the pump station so that safeguards can be put into place to prevent a similar situation from happening in the future.
