Interim City Manager Withdraws from Consideration as City Manager Candidate

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Michael C. Rogers announced to the City of Charlottesville staff that he is no longer a candidate for the permanent City Manager position. Rogers released a statement to staff that advised them of his decision to withdraw from consideration to be Charlottesville’s permanent City Manager. Rogers stated, “Council has been informed and they expressed a commitment to continue with their search process.”

Rogers went on to tell staff, “While I would have loved to continue working with Council and beside all of you to serve the residents of this great city, personal priorities require that I return home to the District of Columbia full time.”

Rogers shared that he has enjoyed working in the role since joining the team in January 2022. He added, “Serving as Interim City Manager has been challenging, rewarding, and quite busy, but I owe you all so much for helping to achieve everything in that time.”

That time has been since January 2022, when the Robert Bobb Group was retained by City Council to provide City Manager Services. Robert Bobb served as an Administrator on the contract during the time Michael Rogers was physically present as the City Manager. Both were active in helping the city advance matters such as: filling critical staff positions, preparing a collective bargaining ordinance and setting up its framework for launch of the new strategic plan and investment in internal digital infrastructure, completing the compensation study, and completing two balanced city budgets. Rogers said, “I will reflect on my time in Charlottesville fondly, remembering some great people, beautiful scenery, and a rich history.”

Rogers expects to remain in service until City Council appoints a permanent city manager. City Council has recently stated that they have narrowed their search and expect to announce a decision on the next city manager in mid-July.
