Go on a Landmark Tree Photo Safari before February 25, 2021 and be entered to win our grand prize, a hammock from Eagles Nest Outfitters.


Charlottesville is home to magnificent old trees, many of them right in the city! Winter is a wonderful time to see the impressive tree crown without its cover of leaves. We invite you to get to know these special Landmark Trees through a photo safari! 

The Charlottesville Area Tree Stewards developed helpful resources to learn about trees in our city, and you can use their Notable Trees website to complete this photo safari.

How it works in four easy steps:

  1. Visit the Notable Trees website to discover local Landmark Trees. Click on the photo of the tree to learn more about it, and where to find it.
  2. iNaturalist logoDownload the iNaturalist app to your phone. This app, used to document plants and animals, can be used to take a photo of Landmark Trees and identify them.
  3. Find and photograph seven of the Landmark Trees listed on the website. Choose from the list of ten trees below:
  4. Submit iNaturalist information by February 25, 2021. Show us that you visited seven different Landmark trees.  When you have seven photos taken using the iNaturalist app.*, send an email with either your iNaturalist username or links to the photos on iNaturalist. Once your photos have been reviewed, you’ll be entered in a raffle to win our grand prize, a hammock from Eagles Nest Outfitters. The grand prize winner will be announced on March 1, 2021.

Email Submission

* To take a photo, open the iNaturalist app on your smartphone. Use the “Observe” button (camera icon) at the bottom of your screen and select “Camera” to take the photo. Try to get most of the tree in your shot so it’s easier for us to confirm that you found the correct tree! If you like the photo, you can accept it. Then you can select “What did you see?” for help with tree identification. Since you already know the type of tree, you can select the correct species from the list. Once selected, look below the species name and choose “Yes” for Captive/Cultivated (the trees were planted and are not wild), and then hit “Share” to post the photo to iNaturalist.
