Full Project Summary:
On May 9th the Charlottesville Department of Public Works began work on an improvement project impacting Market Street between Ridge/McIntire and 9th Street NE. The project will enhance the condition, walkability, and conveyance of multi-modal transportation elements. The total project will be broken up into three work phases with a planned completion date of July 14th.
Phase One – ADA Ramp Improvements. The work is scheduled to be completed by June 8th. Work will bring existing ADA ramps into compliance with current ADA standards to ensure safe and efficient walkability. Operations will progress beginning on the south side of Market Street. During this stage, Public Works crews will work from east (Ridge/McIntire) to west (9th Street NE). Work on the north side of the street will be addressed from east to west.
Phase Two – Paving. Paving operations will begin on approximately June 20th and be completed by June 30th. Milling and paving operations will be executed in two sections. Section one will include Ridge McIntire Road to 4th Street NE, as well as 2nd Street NW from Market to the Downtown Mall. Section two includes 4th Street NE to 9th Street NE.
Phase Three – Street Marking. New street markings will enhance visibility and include improved vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle features. This phase will begin on approximately July 5th and be completed by July 14th.
Project Impact Mitigation Efforts
For the duration of the project, each week’s work will be completed by noon Fridays, with the majority of heavy work completed by the end of the day Thursdays. Every reasonable effort will be made to ensure that businesses are not impacted by the project on the following days:
Mother’s Day – Friday, May 12th
UVA Graduation – Friday, May 19th – Sunday, May 21st
Memorial Day – Monday, May 29th
Election Day – Tuesday, June 13th
July 4th Holiday
Schedules of major entertainment venues will also be accommodated.
Paving operations will be the most disruptive phase of work, and will require some periods of street closure. This work will not begin before 9:00 AM each day and will be completed no later than 3:30 PM.
To minimize the disruption of supply deliveries to Downtown businesses, select loading zone areas that are normally available only from 6 AM to 11 AM will be extended to 3pm. To maintain a balance of ease of access for deliveries and the need for customer parking, only those loading zones in the immediate vicinity of active work zones will be modified.
